RULES & REGULATIONS

 

Entry Requirements & Eligibility

  • Youth Arts Festival  (YAF) is open to dancers of all nationalities and ages.

  • Participants' age is determined as of 1 January 2020.

  • Professional dancers are not permitted to compete in this competition. Professional dancers are defined as persons who are currently, or have been, employed as a full-time dancer (apprentices included) with a professional dance company.

  • Participants may enter representing a school or as an independent student without school affiliation.

  • Participants are allowed to participate in all dance genres, and in all segments.

  • Each solo participant may be admitted for the competition in the appropriate age category or one age category higher under the same genre.

  • Solo participants must perform different solo if participating in two age categories under the same genre.

  • For duo, trio, ensemble and group dance, the age will be determined by the oldest candidate in the group.

Criteria

Classical Ballet

  • Participants can perform either classical repertoire variation or choreographed dance.

  • Maximum duration:

    • Solo: 2.5 minutes

    • Duo : 3 minutes

    • Trio : 3 minutes

    • Ensemble: 5 minutes (4-10 participants)

    • Group: 5 minutes (11 or more participants)

  • Participants may choose to perform in pointe shoes or soft ballet shoes. There will be no additional marks awarded for candidates who perform in pointe shoes. SDA encourages all candidates to practice safe and correct technique if performing in pointe shoes.

  • Participants will be judged based on ballet technique, performance and musicality.

Contemporary

  • Maximum duration:

    • Solo: 2.5 minutes

    • Duo : 3 minutes

    • Trio : 3 minutes

    • Ensemble: 5 minutes (4-10 participants)

    • Group: 5 minutes (11 or more participants)

  • Participants will be judged based on their contemporary technique, including floor work, control and off-balance, the use of spine, performance and musicality.

Jazz/Lyrical

  • Maximum duration:

    • Solo: 2.5 minutes

    • Duo : 3 minutes

    • Trio : 3 minutes

    • Ensemble: 5 minutes (4-10 participants)

    • Group: 5 minutes (11 or more participants)

  • Participants will be judged based on technique (speedy and dynamic), performance (expression and strong personality), musicality, and ability to use motion to interpret music and express emotion.

Open Category

  • Maximum duration:

    • Solo: 2.5 minutes

    • Duo : 3 minutes

    • Trio : 3 minutes

    • Ensemble: 5 minutes (4-10 participants)

    • Group: 5 minutes (11 or more participants)

  • For any other dance genres including but not limited to Tap, Hip Hop, street Dance, Chinese Dance, Folk Dance, Rhythmic, etc.

  • Participants will be judged based on technique, performance and musicality.

Scoring

  • The jury is comprised of both male and female judges.

  • The final score for each participant/dance is the average of scores given by the jury.

  • A jury member who is associated with any participant or school will be exempted from giving marks to the participant(s).

Awards

  • Best school: School with the highest average score

  • Grand Awards: Overall highest score​

    • Grand Award (Ballet Solo)

    • Grand Award (Contemporary Solo)

    • Grand Award (Duo/Trio)

    • Grand Award (Ensemble/Group)

  • For all age categories and segments:

    • Gold: Score 90 and above

    • Sliver: Score 80 and above

    • Bronze: Score 70 and above

  • Potential award: For participants that show potential to develop further

  • Encouragement award: For participants that show confidence in their performance

Registration

  • YAF reserves the right to deny any registration at its discretion.

  • Applicants will be disqualified should there be any false information filled in the entry forms.

  • Entries are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations will close by 1 November 2020

  • Changes of registered information will incur an administrative fee of S$20 and may not be reflected in the competition program booklet.

  • Registration is only confirmed upon receipt of payment.

Consent

Competitors’ parents and schools are deemed to agree that the solo performance video involving your child/student will be viewed by SDA, IBGPS jury members, as well as the faculty members of the schools/companies of the IBGPS jury members and scholarship providers.

 

Filming

  • Only 1 round of filming is required.

  • Videos should have clear sound and image quality. 

  • The video should be in one single take, with full body view at all times, preferable from the centre front of the studio. Where centre front view is not possible, videos may be taken from either front corner of the studio or through the reflection of the mirror.

  • Competitors are allowed to dance with or without stage make-up and hairpiece.

  • Video of previous stage performance is not accepted. 

Safe Measurement Advisory

  • Participants from Singapore are to observe safe distancing guidelines by National Arts Council for digital productions:

    • Limit the total number of persons (cast and crew) to 30.  

    • Of the total number, a maximum of 10 performers may be unmasked at any given time.

    • If you are submitting a group item with participants wearing masks, participants will not be marked for their facial expression as they are wearing masks and will not affect the final judging score.

    • Minimal physical contact is advised when choreographing the piece.

    • Please refer to the NAC website for updates.

  • Participants outside of Singapore are to adhere to your own country's safe measurement advisories in the process of video recording.

Attire

Competitors are allowed to dance in either costumes or practice wear.

Submission of videos

  • The video should bear a title throughout, with the competitor number and genre at the top left corner of the video screen in the following format:

    • "Competitor number_Category_Ballet" or "Competitor number_Category_Contemp"

    • (For example: 051_Solo_Ballet or 116_Trio_Contemp)

  • YAF will be sending a dropbox link where competitors will be required to submit their videos in a '.MP4' format.

  • Video submissions dates are 15 November 2020 - 15 December 2020

  • Competitors participating in multiple segments are required to submit each video file separately.

  • Once the footage has been received, it will be scored by IBGPS judges.

Announcement of YAF Competition results

  • The results of the competition will be announced on YAF website and social media.

  • Electronic certificates for winners will be sent by email to participants. 

Photography & Recordings

  • SDA owns the right to all videos and sound recordings submitted for the event. 

  • By registering for YAF, participants, or participants’ parents / legal guardians, give their permission for SDA, and/or SDA’s authorised third parties to use such videos and sound recordings for promotional and commercial purposes without any payment.

Health & Safety

  • Participants agree to indemnify SDA from any legal action and/or cost resulting from any physical injury, illness or damage, and mental stress sustained during any activity related to YAF.

Others

  • ​​Competitor number will be announced after 1 November 2020.

  • SDA reserves the right to make amendments to the Rules and Regulations of YAF without prior notice.

  • Failure to comply with the SDA Rules and Regulations will lead to disqualification from YAF.

  • Registration constitutes acceptance of the Rules and Regulations.
